Routine Floating
Floating is the smoothing down of the sharp enamel points. These points form on the cheek side of the upper molars and premolars and the tongue side of the lower molars and premolars. Sharp enamel points
are reduced to a smooth surface with hand floats (like rasps) or power instruments like the Powerfloat®.
Odontoplasty is the reduction of the crown of the tooth that has not worn properly during chewing. Examples of problems that would require odontoplasy are hooks,
ramps,
excessive transverse ridges
and wave mouth.
The incisors may also require reduction or alignment by odontoplasty for problems such as incisor slants
or curvatures (smiles or frowns). These can be caused by misaligned teeth, malocclusions, or weakened teeth that wear abnormally.
Intraoral Extraction
Wolf Teeth
Wolf teeth extraction
is performed to keep the wolf tooth from interfering with the bit. This procedure should be done under sedation and local block of anesthetic to numb the tooth and make the procedure pain free.
